Venturing into new territory

We're hitting the new decade hard here at GoToAK with several fresh adventures to talk about.

Two of those happened in Girdwood at Alyeska Resort.

Photographer Rich Jordan and I, with the help of expert snowboarder Morgan Hebert, took a close look at Alyeska's new run, Northwest Passage, last weekend.

Skiers have been eyeing this pillowy terrain for years. Alyeska thinned out the trees, built a traverse last summer, and got the go ahead to open it Jan. 21.

Unfortunately, a little ways inside the gate on my second run through the Northwest Passage, I broke my board landing a cliff drop. All in a day's work.

Along with the full story, you can find extra helmet cam videos of the new area, as well as a couple runs Morgan and I took from High Silvertip, up on Alyeska's headwall.

Web editor and Alaska explorer extraordinaire Kortnie Westfall took a trip out to the resort to see its first competition on the new super-sized halfpipe. Her story about the comp has extra video of the competitors skying for points.

Kortnie also made a trip up toward Fairbanks for a night's stay in a cabin near Chena Hotsprings. The northern lights peeked through, and she got some great shots of the green, shimmering curtains. She's writing a blog about that trip, so stay tuned for more.

Also check out Coast Magazine's breakdown of Alaska's toughest endurance races. We like it extreme here, and the athletes in these races know it.

That's all for now.
